Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “küçük sindirilebilirler”) tanılamamlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine rabıtalanmasıyla oluşan kısaca polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino hamız kalıntısı ile başkası arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” veya peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]
Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (veya çok sayıda polipeptit madun birimi barındırır). Ana fark peptitlerin kısaca, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]
Protein sentezi sırasında her amino hamız, öbür amino asite temelli, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle rabıtalanır. Polipeptid mimarisına sertlan amino asitlerin her biri mimariya peptid rabıtalarıyla rabıtalanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu sırasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir su çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]
Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Malum en uzun polipeptit, kestirmece 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda bulunan “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine sertlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, muaf amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin öbür ucundaki muaf α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıya C ucu adı verilir.
